Start with the network, not the app
Compare the Wi-Fi network on both devices. Mesh systems are usually fine, but guest networks and router client-isolation settings can prevent one device from reaching another. Temporarily disable a VPN on the iPhone while testing local discovery.
Wake the television fully. Some models do not advertise or accept a connection while in deep standby. If the TV has just joined Wi-Fi, give it a moment before running another scan.
Check iPhone and TV permissions
In iOS Settings, make sure Universal TV Remote Control IQ can access the Local Network. On the TV, confirm that control by mobile apps or external devices is allowed.
For Samsung or LG, clear a previously denied app from the television's device list, then reconnect and accept the prompt. For Roku, verify Control by mobile apps and Network access. For Android/Google TV, wait for and enter the full six-character code.
When discovery works but buttons do not
Forget the saved television in the app and pair it again. A TV software update or router address change can invalidate the old session. Manual IP connection is useful when discovery packets are blocked but direct local traffic still works.
If only one button fails, the model may not expose that command. Power and volume are the most variable because they depend on standby behavior, HDMI-CEC and the relationship between a streaming box and the television.
Seven-minute connection check
- Match the Wi-Fi
Confirm the phone and TV use the same non-guest network.
- Allow local access
Enable Local Network permission for the app in iOS Settings.
- Wake and authorize the TV
Turn the screen on and enable or approve mobile-device control.
- Reconnect cleanly
Forget the saved TV, rescan or enter its current IP address, and pair again.
Common questions
Why can the app find my TV but not connect?
The TV may have denied the app or disabled mobile control. Clear the denial, enable network remote access and pair again.
Should I reinstall the app?
Usually not. Network and TV permissions are more common causes. Reinstalling will not change a blocked guest network or a TV-side denial.
Why does volume work on one TV but not another?
Volume control can depend on the TV platform, streaming-device setup and HDMI-CEC. The connected device may not expose the same command.
